This was a brand new, almost impromptu Friday evening race up Lantern Pike that was combined with Hayfield School summer games. It was a tough and testing route, like all Hayfield races are, with the novelty of competing with juniors who ran the same race at the same time. I always find it humbling and impressive to compete with youngsters, plenty of whom are able to run me ragged and wipe the floor with my best efforts. The bonus was the barbecue at the finish and live music in the school hall before the prize presentations.
